Esta cicatrizaci\u00f3n altera la estructura y la funci\u00f3n hep\u00e1tica normales, reduciendo la capacidad del h\u00edgado para procesar nutrientes, hormonas, f\u00e1rmacos y toxinas y para producir prote\u00ednas vitales, como las que intervienen en la coagulaci\u00f3n de la sangre. A diferencia del da\u00f1o hep\u00e1tico agudo, la cirrosis se desarrolla lentamente a lo largo de los a\u00f1os como resultado de una agresi\u00f3n cr\u00f3nica y continua al h\u00edgado. La cirrosis altera estas funciones, lo que puede provocar desnutrici\u00f3n, hemorragia, infecciones y un mayor riesgo de c\u00e1ncer de h\u00edgado. El diagn\u00f3stico temprano de la cirrosis y el manejo adecuado de sus causas son fundamentales para preservar la fase compensada, mejorar la calidad de vida del paciente y retrasar la progresi\u00f3n de la enfermedad. Una vez que el paciente desarrolla cirrosis descompensada, comienzan a presentarse complicaciones asociadas con la hipertensi\u00f3n portal, tales como ascitis (acumulaci\u00f3n de l\u00edquido en la cavidad abdominal), hemorragias por v\u00e1rices esof\u00e1gicas, g\u00e1stricas o rectales, y encefalopat\u00eda hep\u00e1tica (alteraci\u00f3n neurol\u00f3gica secundaria a la acumulaci\u00f3n de toxinas).
