El reflujo del contenido \u00e1cido puede ocurrirle a cualquier persona, pero se considera una enfermedad cuando provoca s\u00edntomas frecuentes o graves, o cuando da\u00f1a el es\u00f3fago, la faringe o las v\u00edas respiratorias. Normalmente, una v\u00e1lvula muscular situada en el extremo inferior del es\u00f3fago, llamada esf\u00ednter esof\u00e1gico inferior, impide que el \u00e1cido del est\u00f3mago ascienda al es\u00f3fago. En la ERGE, esta v\u00e1lvula se relaja con demasiada frecuencia y permite que el \u00e1cido suba al es\u00f3fago. permite la visualizaci\u00f3n directa de la parte superior del tubo digestivo, que incluye el es\u00f3fago, el est\u00f3mago y el duodeno (la primera porci\u00f3n del intestino delgado). Durante este procedimiento, se introduce por la boca un tubo fino y flexible denominado endoscopio -equipado con su propia lente y fuente de luz- y se hace avanzar hasta el principio del intestino delgado. Suele utilizarse para ayudar a los m\u00e9dicos a evaluar s\u00edntomas como dolor abdominal superior persistente, n\u00e1useas, indigesti\u00f3n, v\u00f3mitos y dificultad para tragar. Tambi\u00e9n es una prueba excelente para identificar y tratar el origen de las hemorragias del tracto gastrointestinal superior. Durante la endoscopia pueden tomarse peque\u00f1as muestras de tejido, conocidas como biopsias, utilizando herramientas especiales que se introducen a trav\u00e9s del endoscopio. Estas biopsias se env\u00edan a un laboratorio para su an\u00e1lisis microsc\u00f3pico, lo que permite un diagn\u00f3stico m\u00e1s preciso de diversas afecciones.
